History
Quebec City is the oldest city in Canada. Its first inhabitants were Indians and Inuit. The first Europeans to visit shores were Norse whalers and cod fishermen. There are 11 First Nations in Quebec: the Inuit, Cree Innu, Attikamekw, Alonquin, Micmac, Malecite, Abénaki, Mohawk, Naskapi and Huron-Wendat.
Samuel de Champlain got the native Canadian inhabitants heavily interested in the fur trade. The economic life of Quebecers centered around agriculture and forestry. The English snatched control of the burgeoning city in 1629, but a few years later signed a treaty.
