Thomas Newcomen was born in Dartmouth, Devon in 1664. Newcomen was the inventor, who invented the atmospheric steam pumping engine. It is calling the Newcomen engine. He worked as an ironmonger and so described himself throughout his life. He is not only sold items but fabricated parts himself from metal. The location of his house and workshop are known and are commemorated by places in Dartmouth. He worked for many years on his invention. He was successfull in about 1710 with the construction of the world's first reciprocating steam engine. The Newcomen steam engine used the force of atmospheric pressure to do the work
